From Hopelessness to Hope
A Lived-Experience Perspective on Suicide Prevention
A reframing of suicidal ideation as an escalation of hopelessness, teaching skills to restore agency in the moment rather than solely relying on downstream crisis response.
If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number (988 in the US) or visit theshinehopecompany.com/get-support for a list of global resources. This course is not a crisis service.
A Letter to You
Ā
My name is Kathryn Goetzke.
I created this course because it is what I wish I could have taught my dad before he died by suicide.Ā And it is what I wish I had known myself before I tried to take my own life.
I have been told by doctors that I am at high risk for suicide. I carry nearly every known risk factor. I was also told that restricting access to means and calling suicide hotlines were the primary ways I should stay alive.
I knew that would not be enough for me.
I did not need to be told not to die.
I needed to understand what was happening inside my brain when suicidal thoughts showed up, and what I could do in those moments.
So I set out on a mission to learn everything I could about suicide, hopelessness, and Hope.
I spent years studying, teaching, listening, researching, improving, and refining what actually helps, not just in theory, but in real moments of despair. I integrated lived experience with Hope Science, neuroscience, and global mental health research.
What you are about to learn is the system I use to manage my own suicidal ideation.
This course is my way of sharing that system with you.

What This Course Is (and What It Is Not)
This course is not therapy.
It is not medical advice.
It is not a substitute for care from a qualified mental health professional.
It is not the single answer. It is additional ideas and new perspectives from someone who has lived it.Ā
It is also not about convincing you to want to live.
I cannot make you want to live.
But I can share skills.Ā
Skills to understand what suicidal thoughts actually are.
Skills to recognize when hopelessness is taking over.
Skills to help your thinking brain come back online.
Skills to reduce the intensity of the moment.
Skills to move from despair and helplessness toward safety and possibility.
Who This Course is For?
This course is for you if you experience suicidal thoughts.
It is also for caregivers who are trying to support someone they love and feel unsure what to say or do and want more ideas..
It is for friends helping friends.
For parents, partners, siblings, teachers, clinicians, and helpers.
For anyone who wants to understand suicide not as a mystery or moral failure, but as a human experience rooted in hopelessness.
This course is for all of us, because every human experiences moments of hopelessness.
What matters is whether we have the skills to manage those moments.

Why Suicide Is So Hard to Predict
Ever wonder why we cannot reliably predict who will die by suicide?
Because we all experience moments of hopelessness.
Hopelessness is not rare.
It is not abnormal.
And it does not ālookā the same in everyone.
What determines risk is not whether hopelessness appears, but whether despair and helplessness collide without skills to interrupt the moment.
This course teaches what that moment is, and what helps.

Why This Approach Is Different
Ā
Suicide prevention is often treated as unpredictable or unknowable.

It does not pathologize you.
It does not shame you.
It does not reduce you to a diagnosis.
It teaches skills for the moment that matters most.

A Final Note
If you are here for yourself, I am really glad you are here.
If you are here for someone else, thank you for caring.
If you are here because you do not know what else to do, you are not alone.
I cannot promise that life will always feel manageable.
But I can promise that skills change outcomes.
This course is my gift to you, and to anyone you love who needs it.
